Accelerated Solvent Extraction 350 (ASE 350)
The ASE 350 is used for extracting organic compounds from solid samples using solvents at elevated temperatures and pressures. Allows quick and accurate analysis of compounds found at low concentration in matrixes that are often difficult to detect. The ASE 350 is being used intensively for the extraction of pharmaceutical compounds from soil, plant organs, manure and insects.

Sartorius Cubis® Micro Balance
The ultra-micro balance allows accurate measurements of objects weighing between 1 microgram and 6 grams. It allows weighing individual minute insects, such as parasitic wasps (mean weight ca 24 micrograms), flies, bees and aphids; measurement of food consumption by insects, quantifying changes in dry weight of various materials such as rearing media; and more.

SP Scientific Benchtop Freeze Dryer (Lyophilizer)
The SP Scientific benchtop freeze dryer (lyophilizer) is for freeze-drying samples in aqueous solution (not suitable for non-aqueous solvents). It is suitable for concentrating proteins/metabolites from cultures or environmental samples as well as freeze drying plant and microbial material. Capacity of up to 3 liters.
The instrument is set up in the Eisenberg building (Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology).

The Mastersizer 3000 - Malvern
The Mastersizer 3000 - Malvern uses the technique of laser diffraction to measure the particle size and particle size distribution of materials. It does this by measuring the intensity of light scattered as a laser beam passes through a dispersed particulate sample. These data are then analyzed to calculate the size of the particles that created the scattering pattern.
Measurements:
From 10 nm to 3.5 mm using a single optical measurement path, making it suitable for an extremely wide range of applications.
Sample dispersion units:
Six wet dispersion accessories to handle an extended range of sample volumes and a wide variety of dispersants.
A dry dispersion system enables rapid and reproducible powder dispersion.
The instrument is set up in the interdepartment equipment unit (Zabam).
